Weston celebrates 35 years of Junior Rugby
35 years ago Bob Hedges set up England's first recognised junior section in rugby. For the RFU's original promotional material, Weston was the scene for many of the photos.
Last Saturday saw the culmination of his dream, as Weston RFC were awarded the RFU's Seal of Approval and Sport England's ClubMark. The occasion was marked by a Juniors sponsor's lunch, an U7/8s curtain raiser and collection for the U14's Serbian Tour, due in 2005.
Of the current first team players, 17 were ex Weston Junior/Colts. The club's Junior President. Bert Hedges was instrumental in helping the club getting the recognition it deserved. "Having spent the last part of 20 years playing, watching, listening to, talking rugby, coaching is the next step in the development of our club. We now have over 30 RFU qualified coaches, all ex - 1st team, which has got to be something, We want to be the best in the terms of enjoyment of rugby closely followed by being the most successful" The current Chairman, Paul Tottle added the following comments " The last 2 years have seen over 20 local businesses get involved and without them we could not kit them out as well as we have, it doesn't stop but thanks to all the sponsors your help has been invaluable
