Weston Colts (27) v (15) Wellington Colts

Weston Colts retained the Somerset Colts cup for the fifth year in a row after they made no mistake in the replay after the tied match at Bath.

Weston made a couple of changes for this match bringing in Michael Leahy at inside centre and swapping the wings over with Steve Thompson switching to the left and James Arnold going on the right. With Ned Barker coming in at lock the changes worked like a dream with Leahy and Barker quite outstanding all game. Weston took the lead when after missing a penalty the prolific James Mackay ghosted through a gap after Weston took one against the head from a Wellington scrum. They followed this up with a try created by Mackay and Thompson which was finished off by full back James Trott. Mackay adding the extras. Wellington reduced the arrears with a penalty in front of the posts before Weston scored their third try of the afternoon when Thompson outpaced the Wellington defence after receiving a lovely floated pass from Mackay who again added the extras.

The second half was punctuated by some great forward play by Weston for whom the excellent Kieran Clarke at hooker made several telling breaks along with skipper David Price and young blindside flanker Justin Bearden and it was from one such break by Bearden that Thompson gratefully went over for his second of the afternoon to put Weston out of sight. With the game all but safe Weston made use of their replacements and with loss of concentration Wellington scored two late consolation tries but the result at this point was not in doubt.

For Weston as well as the names mentioned it would be fair to say that this was a team victory with England under eighteen prop Yann Thomas providing the corner stone of the pack and lock Ben Bloor again influential in the loose. With workhorses Eddie Saunders and Jed Dillon doing their usual graft in the back row and talented scrum half Jack Conway on top form it was a tight choice for man of the match but it was outside centre Josh Roberts partner Leahy who for his defensive display allied to straight running lines who just shaded it over Thompson and Mackay.
